For
Blue Sky Institute's
Old Time Songsters and Showmanship Music Program
Curriculum Overview
The Old Time Songsters and Showmanship
Music Program, hereinafter referred to as The Program,
is designed to involve students in:
Music, Performance, and Community Service. The key elements of this program
are, first: to teach the students to sing a one hour long selection of well
liked folk songs, to the accompaniment of professional musicians, and second:
to have the students perform the songs at Senior Citizens Centers, Retirement
Homes and Care Centers within the community.
The program could be tailored to fit into either a summer school
schedule time frame or into a Semester of regular school schedule. The general
distribution of available time would be two thirds of the term for learning the
songs and rehearsing the Show, and one third of the term for the performances.
Therefore, for a Summer School schedule, the program could consist of 10
weeks of classes. Classes could be one
and one half hours each, four times a week for the first 6 weeks and two nights
per week of 2 hours each for the last 4 weeks to allow for eight 1 hour
performances at local area senior citizen centers and retirement homes.
The Program schedule and frequency could be tailored to fit into the
framework of the schedule at the host schools. We feel that there should be a minimum
of two classes per week of at least one hour per class in order for the program
to be successful.
The class time will be spent in learning to sing and play accompaniment
to a variety of favorite tunes, while learning the cultural history of each song.
Also, each student will be asked to prepare a 1 to 2 minute spoken piece to present at each
performance between songs, to provide experience in public speaking. Assistance and guidance will be offered in
the preparation of the spoken pieces.
An exposure to the elements of
stage work and sound systems will also be one of the benefits for students
participating in the Program.
Program Objectives
The primary purpose of The Program is to provide instruction and
experience in various aspects of Music together with instruction and experience
in Public Speaking. Also, experience will be provided in community service
through the performances. An awareness
and appreciation of culturally diverse Music will be taught. We intend to help
students achieve a higher level of respect for themselves and their community
through these activities, thus improving the overall welfare of the community
at large while improving each individual students prospects and outlook.
Student Population Target
The targeted student population will be drawn from Salt Lake
Area alternative schools, private
schools and public schools with a high ratio of 'at risk' students. We hope to
conduct 4 classes during the Summer of 2000, of up to 20 students each.
Program Staffing
The program staff will consist of one Utah State Licensed Music
teacher per class as well as one or more Professional Musicians per class who
will assist in accompaniment of performances and assist with tutoring on
instruments and voice.
Funding
The funding will be derived from various sources including
financial support from individuals, corporations, and such Societies, Trusts,
and Funds as are eager to become part of this beneficial program in our
community through their sponsorship. Your generous financial contribution may
make the difference between having this program in our community or not.
